Some Highlights (mid 2006 – to date)
- Solidarity Africa Network led in organizing a debt repudiation conference in Nairobi which drew 70 participants from around the world (June 2006).
- Two Alternative Rites of Passage outreach seminars attended by over 250 adolescent (August 2006).
- A speaking tour on debt by the Executive Director in Norway (October/ November 2006), including the Norwegian Social Forum and student groups.
- Participation and organizing the Pan-African Youth Forum in advance of the 2007 WSF event for youth from over 20 African countries (Nov. 2006).
- An Alternative Rites of Passage program with two sessions (one for boys, one for girls) with a total of 13 participants (Nov./Dec. 2006).
- Conducted “Pre-WSF mobilization seminars” for communities in Eastern, Rift Valley, and Central provinces. (November 2006 – January 2007).
Commemoration of World AIDS Day (December 1st) - public witness, march, and rally with over 120 participants.
- Active participation at the World Social Forum – including three workshops on different topics (gender rights, food security/ sovereignty, and community organizing) and facilitating the participation of over 150 members and allies from around Kenya (January 2007) – followed by four report back sessions (February 2007).
- Organized programs of field visits for WSF delegations to, e.g. urban informal settlements, flower farms in Naivasha, and Daughters of Mũmbi projects. Groups for whom we arranged field visits include Global Exchange, Grassroots Global Justice, Funders Network on Trade and Globalization, and Via Campesina (January 2007).
- Celebration of International Women’s Day, with a mobile voluntary counseling and testing clinic VCT) on HIV/AIDS (March 2007), over 300 adults and 250 schoolchildren participated.
- Solidarity Africa Network initiated, hosted, and continues to facilitate meetings of a coalition of groups concerned about food sovereignty and the establishment of the “Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa” (March 2007- )
- Two 2-day seminars for children 6-10, drawing 195 participants followed by a 3-day members’ seminar drawing 30 participants (April 2007).
- Internet organizing and media work on the World Bank presidential crisis (Solidarity Africa Network). Quoted by The Nation magazine, CBS News website, Voice of America’s “Daybreak Africa,” Democracy Radio (West African radio network) and the Financial Times, among others (April/June 2007).
- Initial meetings to plan multi-organization exchange programs as a follow-up and to consolidate the gains, lessons, and contacts from the WSF experience in Nairobi (March/April 2007).
- Lead organizing (venue, logistics, etc) and anchoring (content, training, materials, etc) a 7-day training in Nairobi on “Debt Audits” on behalf of Africa Jubilee South and Jubilee South for 50 participants from 15 African countries (July/August 2007).
- International meetings related to ongoing work and commitments – Jubilee South International Coordinating Committee meetings; International Council evaluation meetings on WSF 2007; G8 Summit (Rostock) activities, among them strategy meetings and networking on debt and the October Week of Global Action on Debt & the international financial institutions (IFIS) (June 2007).
- Attended and made multiple presentations at the first U.S. Social Forum (June/July 2007).
- Lead organizing (venue, logistics, etc) and anchoring (content, training, materials, etc) a 7-day training in Nairobi on “Debt Audits” on behalf of Africa Jubilee South and Jubilee South for 50 participants from 14 African countries (July/August 2007)
- Participated in the bi-annual Gender Festival, organized by FemAct and our partner organization, Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP), in Dar es Salaam. Organized a 12-person delegation of group members, staff, and board members (September 2007).
