WHERE - Ngure/Gitaru - Adjacent to Ha Magu Stage

WHEN - Saturday, March 8, 2008 . 10:00AM - 3:00PM

For the third year, members, friends, and allies will gather to celebrate International Women's Day at an event organized by Daughters of Mumbi Global Resource Center. Scheduled to run from 10:00AM - 3:00PM, the celebration will focus on the theme “Celebrate Women, Celebrate Life.”

Participants and speaker will name and tell stories of women who have influenced, inspired, contributed, or otherwise had an impact in their lives. Through reflections, skits, poems, and song, women’s lives, challenges, triumphs, struggles, and realities will be addressed.

Members of the Daughters of Mumbi network will join others around the world in celebrating this important day and take the time to recognize the contributions of women. As Kenyans we also take special note of the challenges facing women in the wake of the post electoral violence which often targeted women because of their gender and vulnerabilities. All – young, old, women, and men - are invited and welcomed.

Daughters of Mũmbi Global Resource Center is inspired by values drawn from four meanings of Mũmbi in the Gĩkũyũ language and culture:

Creator

Connecting to the environment, which ‘must include people as a species worth saving’;

Clan

Pledging to build united, just, and caring communities and relationships at all levels;

First Mother

Honoring women’s roles in anchoring family and community, and respecting our diverse cultural roots

Potter

Recognizing dignity in the work of our hands, especially women’s work and creativity.
