Rwama Blessed Mothers

A typical Daughters of Mũmbi group is Rwama Blessed Mothers, eleven women who came together under the facilitation of Daughters of Mũmbi animator Wairimu Gitundu in April 2005. The women live in the same general area, and knew each other from their attendance at Ngure Presbyterian Church.

Like other groups, their first joint project was learning how to plant garden bags (see above), which several members continue to maintain. Most of the women, who live in a rural area close to Nairobi, have some land available, and they support each other in planting both on their plots and in bags.

The women also maintain a revolving fund, or “merry-go-round.”

Children of group members have participated in each of the Daughters of Mũmbi children’s seminars, and the members have participated in women’s or members’ seminars. The group sent delegations to the two International Women’s Day celebrations and the 2005 and 2006 march/rallies on World AIDS Day organized by Daughters of Mũmbi.  Members also participated in World Social Forum mobilization events and the WSF itself.

Rwama Blessed Mothers has made a special project of assisting a widow in their community. Five of her six children still live at home and depend on her. Previous offers of help usually required that the children work instead of go to school. Using their joint connections and advocacy, the group got her a job at a local school, which entitled her children to free tuition. They also raise money to help her with food, rent, and clothing.
